Shopify Review for UAE Sellers: Is It Worth It?

StoreStarter Team | | 8 min read

What You'll Learn

Honest Shopify review for UAE sellers โ€” pricing in AED, Arabic support, Tabby/Tamara BNPL, Aramex shipping, and how it compares to Salla and Noon.

Shopify powers 4 million stores worldwide โ€” but it was not built for the UAE, and pretending otherwise does not help anyone.

The platform is genuinely excellent. It is the easiest way to build a professional online store, the app ecosystem is unmatched, and the design templates make even first-time sellers look polished. But “excellent globally” and “excellent for UAE sellers” are not the same thing. Arabic support is partial. Pricing is in USD. Tabby and Tamara require app installation. Aramex integration is not automatic.

Does that mean you should avoid Shopify? Not necessarily. For many UAE sellers, it is still the best choice โ€” but only if you go in with realistic expectations about what works smoothly and what requires workarounds. This review covers both.

Shopify at a Glance

  • What it is: A hosted ecommerce platform for building and running an online store without coding
  • Who it is for: Sellers building branded stores, especially those targeting English-speaking or international customers
  • Price range: AED 140 to AED 1,465/month (billed in USD)
  • Markets available: Global โ€” works in 175+ countries including the UAE
  • Our rating: 7.5/10 for UAE sellers (9/10 globally)

The 1.5-point gap between our UAE and global ratings is not about quality โ€” Shopify is a superb platform. It reflects the extra setup and cost required to make it work optimally in the UAE market compared to platforms built specifically for this region.

Key Features

Store Builder and Design

Shopify’s store builder is best-in-class. Period.

You get access to over 100 official themes (12 free, the rest AED 500-1,300 one-time purchase) and thousands of third-party themes. The drag-and-drop editor lets you customise layouts, colours, fonts, and sections without touching code. Even the free themes look professional.

For UAE sellers specifically, look for themes labelled “RTL compatible” if you plan to offer Arabic-language pages. The Dawn theme (free, Shopify’s default) supports RTL, as do several third-party options. Just be aware that “RTL compatible” does not mean “Arabic-perfect” โ€” some design elements like badges, notification bars, and certain widgets may not render cleanly in Arabic.

Payment Gateway Options

Shopify does not offer Shopify Payments in the UAE, so you will use a third-party payment gateway. The good options:

  • Tap Payments โ€” best local option. Supports credit cards, Apple Pay, and integrates with Tabby and Tamara for BNPL. Fees: approximately 2.65% + AED 1.00 per transaction.
  • Stripe โ€” clean Shopify integration, supports credit cards and Apple Pay. Fees: approximately 2.9% + AED 1.00. Does not directly integrate Tabby/Tamara.
  • PayTabs โ€” supports cards, mada (for Saudi cross-border), and multiple currencies. Fees: approximately 2.65% + AED 1.00.

On top of gateway fees, Shopify charges an additional transaction fee for using third-party gateways: 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, 0.6% on Advanced. This stacks on top of your gateway’s processing fee. With the Basic plan, your total cost per transaction is approximately 4.65-4.9%.

This is the biggest hidden cost for UAE Shopify sellers. On Salla, there is no platform transaction fee โ€” you only pay the payment gateway’s processing fee.

Tabby and Tamara (Buy Now, Pay Later)

BNPL is not optional in the UAE. Tabby and Tamara are expected at checkout for orders above AED 200, and offering them can increase your average order value by 20-40%.

On Shopify, you install them as apps:

  1. Go to the Shopify App Store
  2. Search for “Tabby” or “Tamara”
  3. Install the official app
  4. Apply for a merchant account with Tabby or Tamara (approval takes 3-7 business days)
  5. Configure the app to display BNPL options on product pages and at checkout

It works โ€” but it is extra setup. On Salla and Zid, Tabby and Tamara are built-in toggles. No app installation, no configuration โ€” just switch it on.

Shipping and Fulfilment

Shopify does not have built-in Aramex or iMile integration for the UAE. You have three options:

Option 1: Shopify Shipping partners. Shopify offers discounted rates with DHL and UPS, but these are primarily for international shipping. For domestic UAE delivery, you need a local courier.

Option 2: Third-party shipping apps. Apps like ShipStation, Shippo, or the Aramex Shopify app connect your store to UAE couriers. Aramex’s official app lets you generate waybills, track shipments, and offer cash on delivery. Most shipping apps cost AED 70-200/month.

Option 3: Manual integration. Process orders in Shopify, then create shipments manually in your courier’s dashboard. This works for low volumes (under 20 orders/day) but becomes painful as you scale.

Cash on delivery: UAE consumers still use COD for 30-40% of orders in some categories. Aramex and iMile both support COD. Make sure your shipping setup handles COD reconciliation โ€” knowing how much cash your courier has collected and when it will be remitted to your bank account.

Arabic Language Support

This is where Shopify’s UAE experience gets complicated.

What works:

  • Product titles and descriptions in Arabic โ€” yes
  • Page content and blog posts in Arabic โ€” yes
  • RTL text rendering in compatible themes โ€” yes
  • Multi-language stores (English + Arabic) using Shopify Markets โ€” yes

What does not work natively:

  • Shopify admin dashboard in Arabic โ€” no, English only
  • Automated emails (order confirmation, shipping notification) in Arabic โ€” requires manual template editing
  • Some theme elements (quick-view popups, filter widgets, search bars) may not align properly in RTL
  • App interfaces and third-party widgets are almost always English-only

The honest assessment: If 80% of your customers read English and you want Arabic as a secondary option, Shopify handles this reasonably well. If your primary audience is Arabic-speaking and you want a seamless Arabic-first experience, Salla is the better choice.

SEO and Marketing

Shopify’s SEO and marketing tools are strong:

  • Clean URL structure, customisable meta titles and descriptions
  • Built-in blog for content marketing
  • Automatic sitemap generation
  • Integration with Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, Meta Ads
  • Email marketing through Shopify Email (free for up to 10,000 emails/month)
  • Abandoned cart recovery (automatically emails customers who left items in their cart)

For UAE sellers running Google Ads or Meta campaigns targeting UAE audiences, Shopify’s marketing integration is straightforward and well-documented.

  • Arabic support is partial โ€” admin remains English-only
  • Tabby, Tamara, Aramex all require separate app setup
  • No built-in Noon or Amazon.ae marketplace integration
  • Total cost of ownership is higher than regional alternatives
  • Several “free” features on Salla/Zid require paid apps on Shopify

Who Should (and Should Not) Use Shopify

Use Shopify if you:

  • Are building a premium, design-focused brand
  • Target English-speaking expats, international customers, or both
  • Plan to sell beyond the UAE and GCC eventually
  • Want the largest ecosystem of apps, themes, and integrations
  • Value design quality and store aesthetics
  • Have AED 2,500-5,000 to invest in your first year

Do not use Shopify if you:

  • Want a fully Arabic platform experience (admin, storefront, emails)
  • Are budget-constrained and need the cheapest possible option
  • Sell exclusively to Arabic-speaking GCC customers
  • Want built-in marketplace integration with Noon or Amazon.ae
  • Want BNPL and local shipping to work out of the box without apps

Alternatives to Consider

  • Salla โ€” free plan available, fully Arabic, built-in Tabby/Tamara. Best for Arabic-speaking merchants targeting GCC customers.
  • Noon Seller โ€” free to join, built-in UAE traffic and logistics. Best for beginners who want sales without building a website. Commission-based (5-27%).
  • WooCommerce โ€” free software, maximum flexibility, full Arabic RTL support. Requires technical knowledge and hosting management.

Our Verdict

Shopify is a 9/10 platform that scores 7.5/10 specifically for UAE sellers. The gap is not about quality โ€” it is about fit.

If you are building a brand that looks beautiful, scales internationally, and primarily serves English-speaking customers, Shopify is still the best choice. The design quality, app ecosystem, and reliability are unmatched.

But if you are an Arabic-speaking seller targeting GCC customers and want everything to work in Arabic out of the box โ€” BNPL, shipping, customer emails โ€” you will spend time and money on Shopify workarounds that Salla gives you for free.

Our recommendation: if your monthly ecommerce budget is above AED 500 and you are building for the long term, Shopify is a sound investment. If you are testing the waters, start with Salla’s free plan or sell on Noon first. You can always migrate to Shopify later โ€” and Shopify makes importing products from other platforms straightforward.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Shopify cost in the UAE per month?
Shopify's Basic plan costs USD 39/month, approximately AED 140/month at current exchange rates. The Shopify plan is USD 105/month (approximately AED 385/month) and Advanced is USD 399/month (approximately AED 1,465/month). All billing is in USD, so the AED amount fluctuates with the exchange rate. On top of the subscription, you pay transaction fees of 0.6-2% when using third-party payment gateways like Tap Payments or Stripe.
Does Shopify support Arabic storefronts in the UAE?
Partially. Several Shopify themes support right-to-left (RTL) Arabic text, and you can write product descriptions, pages, and blog posts in Arabic. However, the Shopify admin dashboard remains in English and some theme elements may not render perfectly in Arabic. If you need a fully Arabic platform โ€” admin, storefront, and automated customer emails all in Arabic โ€” Salla or Zid are better options built specifically for Arabic-speaking merchants.
Can I use Tabby or Tamara on a Shopify store in the UAE?
Yes. Both Tabby and Tamara offer official Shopify apps that you can install from the Shopify App Store. Tabby is free to install (they charge the merchant 4-6% per BNPL transaction). Tamara has a similar model. Installation takes about 15-30 minutes. On Salla and Zid, Tabby and Tamara integration is built-in โ€” you just toggle it on without installing any app.
Is Shopify or Noon better for starting an ecommerce business in the UAE?
They serve different purposes. Noon is a marketplace โ€” it gives you instant access to millions of UAE shoppers and handles logistics through Noon Fulfilled, but you do not own the customer relationship or control your brand. Shopify lets you build your own branded store with full control, but you need to drive your own traffic through ads and social media. For beginners, we recommend starting on Noon to validate your product and make first sales, then building a Shopify store for long-term brand ownership.
